Current Stop Motion Movies

I found an article that talked about a few current and popular movies that are stop motion. Some of them I did not even realize were stop motion! While the majority are for kids - Coraline, FrakenWeenie, The Nightmare Before Christmas - the article mentions the newly released and highly appraised stop motion geared towards adults, Anomalisa. With all of the advanced technology readily available to us in this day and age, I think it is cool that film makers still utilize and embrace the art of stop motion and keep the interest in this art alive for generations to come.

"Anomalisa" - Stop Motion for Adults

"Anomalisa" highlights the art of stop motion and proves that it should be highly regarded and is a beautiful art form. This article talks about how stop motion is usually thought of to be used for children's movies and videos, not for adults. "Anomolisa" pushes the art of stop motion and proves the brilliance behind it. Nominated for awards such as an Oscar and a Golden Globe, "Anomalisa" breaks the barriers of stop motion and proves that it can be utilized for sophisticated, mature stories for adults.

"Blue Hour" by New American Public Art

"Blue Hour" is an interactive piece that incorporates audience participation and time-based elements in the piece. This interactive piece is to represent that morning sun rise. The work responds to motion, and the speed at which the "sun will rise" depends on how fast or slow the audience moves towards the light towers. The faster one moves, the faster the sun "rises."

I think this is a cool interactive piece, as it is playing with time during the day, specifically morning and the sun rise, and plays with the audience's speed in present time.

Karina Smigla-Bobinski's ADA

An interactive and kinetic sculpture, ADA stands for analog interactive installation. Smigla-Bobinski's interactive piece consists of a giant transparent balloon with 300 charcoal sticks attached to the balloon. Placed in a completely white space, people can move the balloon around and each time the balloon hits a surface, the charcoal creates marks.

I think that this works really well in time-based performance art because each time the balloon makes a new design and no room will look the same after the balloon is placed in it.

Research 2: Visionary Guitarist and Composer Kaki King

"Can you paint with sound?" Kaki King is a guitarist who is using her guitar as a digital paintbrush in her new show. Working with collaborators, King computer-mapped her guitar and has a computer listening to it, allowing different images to pop up on the guitar as she is playing. In this new show, she is combining sound and image to create a whole new idea of guitar playing.

Research 1: #ELEVATE by Shia Labeouf

For Labeouf's latest performance art piece, he live streamed a 24-hour elevator ride in Oxford, England. From 9 am on February 19 to 9 am on February 20, Labeouf and two artistic collaborators, Luke Turner and Nastja Sade Ronkko, would remain in the elevator - excluding bathroom breaks and a talk given at the Oxford Union briefly that night. Labeouf allowed visitors/fans to ride on the elevator with him and ask questions. I chose to talk about Labeouf's recent performance art piece because it relates to our time-based media performance art pieces we just created ourselves. Also, Labeouf has recently become known for his 'odd behavior' - or performance art pieces, and I did not know about this recent piece until today. The last piece I recall Labeouf performing was #ALLMYMOVIES where he live streamed his reactions to all of the movies he acted in.
