Stop Motion Reflection

For my stop motion project, I chose to use an inanimate object - paper. The concept behind my video was to depict a piece of paper being thrown out for a poor drawing on it, and it comes to life to escape. It wanders around and after a while realizes it's true potential and worth - the human can't decide that it isn't beautiful. It comes back to the room and reveals an inspiring message - "You are Beautiful" - for the audience to see. Overall, I wanted to convey a positive message that everyone is beautiful/wonderful/capable/etc. in a cute, unique way. Working with an inanimate object allowed flexibility in producing the images and limited the factors I had to rely on, ultimately making it easier to finish on time.

Through this project, I learned how time consuming stop motions can be. It took me 2 weeks, 15+ hours, and over 2,000 images to complete a 3 minute and 20 second video. Regarding the concept of time, I gained a better understanding of time passing in a video through the types of frames and perspectives I shot. The progression - inside, to the hallway, to outside, back to inside - came together nicely and emphasized the passage of time as the paper wandered around.

I greatly appreciated the feedback on my piece - I am glad others could tell this was a piece made by me and that they enjoyed it! I definitely agree with the excessive wandering of the paper outside; I underestimated the amount of time the wandering of the paper would take, so I included more than I originally planned. Next time I would definitely include more time towards the end when the paper reveals the message. I was very happy that the viewers appreciated the different perspectives and frames I shot - I thoroughly planned those out and am glad they helped get my overall message and effect across.

Picture/Sound Project: Be Present

For my picture/sound project, I took multiple portraits with the light moving around the subject's face. Creating a stop-motion effect with the fast pace of the pictures, the light is seen moving around the face constantly, subtly changing the appearance each time. In the background, music is playing with different sounds heard throughout life mixed in. Babies crying and laughing, kids talking, rain, and other sounds that you hear day to day throughout your life are mixed in - recognizable sounds everyone can relate to. At the end, it fades into white and into a color picture with the subject's eyes open and the words heard are: "Hold onto your memories, but be present." My concept for this video is to show how quickly time passes and how much we change. The sounds represent the growth from infant to now, as well as does the black and white to color change from beginning to end. I wanted to represent the passage of time in life and emphasize that time passes so quickly and we change so quickly so we should try to remain present as best we can while still holding onto and cherishing our memories.

Throughout this project, I learned that time could be represented in many different ways. Whether it is the time that it took to make something, or a different time period, I learned that there are many different ways to interpret time. Time is a universal concept, and can be explained in many ways. I learned that there is almost no wrong way to describe time.

I have not presented my project yet, but I believe I will receive good feedback. I would like to learn if my representation of time was perceived well, and how I could improve on my presentation of my portrayal of time.

Photography Exercise 1

It was a beautiful morning at the countryside. The sun was shining and the sky was blue; there were no problems in the world! Bob the Sheep went to look for his favorite breakfast - a bright shiny apple. When he got downstairs, he noticed that the counter was empty. On the floor was a cracked bowl - the bowl that held his apple!

With the help of his trusty bullhorn, Bob called out to his fellow sheep-mates. One by one his friends gathered the kitchen "Attention: I have lost my apple!" Bob announced, as gasps could be heard from all around. "We must look at once!" Bob declared and every sheep in the house went outside into the field in search for his precious apple.

All day Bob and his friends searched high and low, near and far for his beloved apple. All of the fields had been searched and after four long hours, Bob and his friends headed back inside the house. Upset at the loss of his favorite apple, Bob walked towards the fridge to grab a snack to make him feel better, when he slipped on something.

Bob rubbed his head and when he looked up, his beloved apple was by his feet! It rolled out of the bowl and to the other side of the kitchen. Bob squealed with joy as he grabbed his favorite apple off the ground and put it back on the counter. His friends cheered, as their day did not completely go to waste. To celebrate Bob finding his apple, Bob and his friends discussed fruit over bowls of ice cream sundaes.

Internet Appropriation Project

"Family Vacation"

For the internet appropriation project, I decided to use Flickr for the source of my photos and create a narrative of a family vacation. I wanted to use pictures from different people and in different places, but put them together so they looked like one family. I used the tags "family vacation," "vacation," and "disney" to find photos of families on vacation. I created a tumblr and made a post for each day of the vacation with captions - one caption I believe a family would use, and one that describes what is actually going on and how they were feeling. To complete my project, I created a scrapbook utilizing the different photos, imitating what families tend to do after a vacation.

I created new meaning of the images by creating a scrapbook and using the images as if they are all from one family vacation. In reality, these photos are from different families and different times, but together they seem like they are from one family vacation. On tumblr, I posted at least one picture for each day on the vacation and gave them two captions - one expressing what one might post with the picture, and one describing what they were feeling or what was happening. I gave these pictures a story - they follow a narrative. While originally these were all random pictures from different people's vacations, I made up a story utilizing these photos.

Using the internet as my viewing platform enhanced my project. It allowed me to create a narrative and really sell the idea of these photos coming from one family vacation. I was able to tell the story in a linear order, especially through the use of tumblr. I posted photos for each day and ended with the scrapbook, and the use of tumblr allowed me to tell the story in chronological order. I noticed that for my project, tumblr - or a blog site in general - would be the best to view my project as I have the ability to tell the story of the vacation in order.

One piece of advice I found helpful during the critique of my piece was to make the distinction between my two captions. When reading them during my presentation, I found it awkward that I did not have a distinction, and I definitely see how that will help me get the overall meaning of my project across. It would help the audience understand that one caption is what I believe the family would caption it and that the other is what is actually happening.

Performance Project
"Through Our Eyes"

For our performance art piece, Allison and I created a video split-screen video of our eyes and projected it onto the wall behind us as we recited a poem/speech we wrote. The concept of "Through Our Eyes" was to recite and describe our daily life and how we feel while the audience could look at us and look directly at our eyes at the same time. Projecting a video of our eyes rather than a picture of our eyes allowed the sense of looking into our eyes in real time as we recited our speech. I believe that the juxtaposition of our eyes and our bodies sitting next to the projected video emphasized the feelings we wanted the audience to experience during our performance. I wanted the audience to literally look at our eyes, emphasizing that the experiences and feelings we are sharing with the audience are how we view the world - through our eyes.

One noticeable difference between the live and mediated performance is that I was more nervous during the live performance. Recording our eyes was done in privacy, with just me and Allison in the room. Performing and sharing our feelings and experiences with the audience left us vulnerable and open to the audience. The mediated aspect of our performance took longer to record and put together than the live part. Overall I was pleased with our performance and how well our live and mediated performances worked together. I learned that performance as a form of time-based media art is a great way to portray a message to the audience. The juxtaposition of real-time - the live performance - and past-time - (usually) the mediated portion - is a strong tool to emphasize the point of the performance and allow the artist to relay different information at the same time.
